Special Areas of Focus in her Accupuncture Practice

While treating a constellation of imbalances with acupuncture, Stephanie has a special interest in anxiety and depression, allergies/ asthma, and fertility issues.

Anxiety and depression

Acupuncture is useful in providing relief from anxiety, depression and stress-related disorders. According to Chinese Medical theories, anxiety and depression can be caused by disharmonies of Qi (life force) and or blood. The symptoms individuals experience with anxiety and depression can be vast and varied. It is the specific symptoms that allow for proper diagnosis and treatment. In Oriental medicine the Body, Mind and Spirit operate as a whole. We can all relate to how anxiety or worry can have significant effects on our digestion, sleep, energy levels etc. Generally speaking, acupuncture works to facilitate a "rest and digest" or parasympathetic state through calming the nervous system. It is the chronic "fight or flight" or sympathetic state which can pose a host of disharmonies including generalized anxiety, depression, insomnia, digestive disorders as well as an overall feeling of disconnect. Acupuncture serves to treat the symptoms as well as root cause of disharmony. Acupuncture can be implemented successfully on its own and also be complimentary to other forms of ongoing therapy.

Asthma and Allergies

In Chinese Medicine allergies and asthma can be caused by internal disharmony, external disharmony or a combination of both. These can be further categorized as excess or deficient types of disharmony. The evaluation of specific symptoms allows for correct diagnosis and treatment. Acupuncture treatment helps to provide relief of acute symptoms while addressing the root cause. Oriental medicine often refers to this approach as "root and branch."  It is through this concept of "root and branch" treatment that symptomatic relief occurs while quelling the potential for future flare ups.

Fertility Issues

In Oriental medicine disharmonies which inhibit one’s ability to conceive can be caused by blood deficiency, blood stasis or what is referred to as jing deficiency. The evaluation of specific symptoms allows for proper diagnosis and treatment. Generally speaking, acupuncture treatments for fertility aim at facilitating a balanced cycle. Treatments focus on harmonizing all phases of the menstrual cycle. Mindful nutrition and lifestyle play a significant role as well. Harmonizing the different phases of one’s cycle creates an optimal environment for conception to be achieved. With regards to IVF, studies have shown that acupuncture treatments received ½ hr prior to and ½ hr post IVF transfer can increase success rate up to 30%.
