Practitioner Profile: Tracey Smith-Diggs

TRACEY A. SMITH-DIGGS, M.Ed.

I am a Recreational Therapist, Wellness Educator, and Program Consultant, with twenty six years of experience in the field of behavioral health. I specialize in Adjunctive Therapies and Program development. I provide workshops and trainings for various populations including, women, adolescents, teen parents, elementary school students, adjudicated youth and participants with recovery challenges.

I create an atmosphere where participants can feel safe to explore their own issues of self-care and lifestyle management, while learning alternative ways of healing. I use Recreational Therapy balanced with Wellness Education to promote emotional, physical, mental, spiritual health and well-being. I encourage empowerment to make needed lifestyle changes.

My workshops of special interest include wellness education, leadership, self-esteem, stress/anger management, depression, relationships, and spiritual growth, to enhance awareness of positive choices and empowerment. My workshops are interactive and experiential, utilizing the creative arts to address trauma, individual strengths and developmental assets. My interactive holistic approach enables me to engage even the most resistant participant. I integrate Restorative Practices<, a communication, conflict transformation model into the workshops. Restorative Practices is an emerging field of practice that enables people to restore and build communities in an increasingly disconnected world. I am committed to the creation of peaceable communities.

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

As a Recreational Therapist my primary focus is to heal, restore and improve overall functioning. I am motivated by observing the therapeutic benefits of purposeful healing activities and leisure experiences, resulting in an increase of well-being. I have consulted for hospitals, nursing homes, community-based, state, and non-profit agencies. I was employed for ten years at Temple University Hospital, Department of Behavioral Health as Coordinator of Adjunctive Therapies, Director of Therapeutic Programs and Director of Partial Hospitalization Program; providing clinical supervision and department management for various disciplines, and students, fulfilling the expectations of a teaching hospital. I served as a board member for the Delaware Valley Partners in Healthcare Association and was the chairperson for the Education Committee. The committee provided seminars and conferences for Behavioral Healthcare agencies
